If there wasn't a breakout band at this year's SXSW festival, there were definitely a few "most talked about" artists. Interestingly, they were all female.
Upon arrival last Thursday at the Levi's/FADER Fort venue in East Austin, the name being bounced around was Janelle Monae, whose gravity-defying pompadour, stylish black-and-white suiting, and tuxedo-clad backing band have earned her a deal with Sean "Puffy" Combs's Bad Boy Records and a spot opening for No Doubt this spring. At Thursday's show, Monae danced frenetically to an original sound that blends cyber-techno dance beats with Afro-punk rock (and a little Nat King Cole balladry for good measure).
